Why did I suddenly buy a Mini PC?

As a new media practitioner, my living and working areas are almost in front of computers, and my dependence on desktops is not high: I can handle my work in the company during the day, and I can use my tablet to deal with some urgent things when I leave work or go on business at night.

I just like its small and delicate appearance

Because my first need is very clear, that is, small size and high appearance value, S600 meets my needs in these two aspects.

First of all, the appearance. Egsmtpc S600 is full of a sense of science and technology. It is gray and black all over. It is like a layer of mirror on the cover, which is very similar to the expression of data in science fiction films. Its power switch is located in the depression on the front, and it also has the interface it usually needs. Well, it's more like science fiction films.

The second is the volume. The size of S600 is only 150*145*40mm. As for how small it is, it may not be obvious to see it alone. If you put a 500ml beverage bottle next to it, you can see that its volume is really small enough. It can be placed directly under the display without occupying space or violating it.

Of course, it also comes with a VESA mount fixed bracket, which can be fixed on the display supporting this bracket. You don't even need to put it on the table, and directly turn a display into a light and thin all-in-one machine.

However, although it is small in size, it should have many interfaces. There are four USB2.0 interfaces, two usb3.1 interfaces, one type-C interface, HDMI and DP as video output interfaces, and a 3.5mm headphone connector.

The rich interface also shows that it can connect multiple display devices at the same time, and it can cope with independent display or duplicate display.

On both sides of the fuselage are its cooling air ducts, which suck on the left and blow on the right. You can hardly hear any sound in normal use. You can feel the existence of this cooling air duct only by occasionally doing some simple video editing and rendering.

Although the computer is small, it can be used

The S600 processor I bought uses the desktop version of ryzen9 5900hx 45W. It is a very good CPU. Although it is only 45W, its performance release is much better than that of many notebook low-voltage versions. 32GB DDR4 memory and 512gb SSD solid state drive are built in by default. The graphics card is a built-in AMD radeon8 graphics core display.

To be honest, there is no problem with this performance when it is used at home for office. I can cope with it, including fixing a picture and making some simple video clips and rendering. Although it is only the performance of core display, the effect of playing some large 3A games is good. After testing, in the default configuration, cyberpunk 2077 is still very smooth to play. If there is no pressure to play mainstream games such as lol, the test here just allows you to have an accurate concept in your heart.

What can I do with it at home?

I tested it from the aspects of video conferencing, web browsing, application startup, editing, spreadsheet processing, photo editing, video editing, rendering and visualization.

Many projects have been carried out during the whole test, including multi person video conference, 4K resolution video viewing, P-map and so on.

In my actual use process, there is no problem using PS to process some pictures or PR to edit some simple videos, so there is no problem for web pages and text editing with lower load.

Not enough performance? Then do it yourself DIY

Some time ago, I removed a mobile phone, which led to my recent removal of the head. I also tried to remove this S600.

Put the top of the computer body down, remove the four rubber pads at the bottom, and then screw out four screws. Open the upper cover is its hard disk layer. It supports the connection of two m.2ssd solid-state drives and a 2.5 'HDD solid-state drive. If you feel that 512g memory is insufficient to meet your needs of working at home, you can also replace it yourself.

Remove the screws on the hard disk layer and lift up the hard disk layer. You can see that there are two memory module slots, an m.2 SSD slot and a wireless network card slot inside. Therefore, if you want to install and replace the memory module or wireless network card, you can directly buy it back and replace it yourself. This kind of overlapping structure is very convenient from maintenance to later update iteration. Novices like me can dismantle it with confidence, Of course, if you are not confident about your skills, S600 also comes with an upgrade manual, and you can easily upgrade these hardware devices according to the above steps.

Summary

To be honest, egsmtpc, a mini computer, has great potential in the field of office and business. The one I bought is the ryzen9 version, priced at 899 $. If it is a lower level ryzen8 version, it only costs 849 $. If you only use it for office, the ryzen8 version is actually enough. The overlapping internal structure also facilitates the timely upgrading of memory and hard disk. However, I suggest adding hard disk to it after buying it. 512gb storage may not be enough for later use.
